Donor-Advised Fund
A donor-advised fund (DAF) is a charitable giving account that allows you to make tax-deductible contributions to a dedicated fund and recommend grants to nonprofit organizations over time.
Benefits of using a DAF
You can contribute cash, stocks, or other assets to your fund, receive an immediate tax deduction, and then direct the fund administrator to distribute grants to qualified charities whenever you choose.
DAFs make charitable giving simple, flexible, and private. Donors can recommend grants online in just a few minutes and may choose to give publicly or anonymously.
Key benefits of a Donor-Advised Fund include:
Immediate Tax Benefits
Donors take a tax deduction in the year they contribute cash, securities, or other assets.
Tax-Free Growth
Funds can be invested, allowing them to grow tax-free before being granted to charity.
Flexibility
Donors can contribute when it’s convenient and recommend grants to charities on their own timeline.
Asset Variety
In addition to cash, DAFs can often accept non-cash assets like stocks, real estate, or complex, illiquid assets.
Once assets are donated to a DAF, they become the property of the sponsoring charitable organization, but you retain “advisory privileges” to recommend where the funds should go.
Already have a donor-advised fund?
You can recommend a grant to RDI directly using our information below:
- Login to your DAF providers website and search for:
- Organization The Renew Democracy Initiative, Inc.
- EIN/tax ID 82-2547275
- Mailing address 1701 Rhode Island Avenue NW, Floor 2, Washington, DC 20036
- Recommend the amount you would like to give and indicate that you’d like your grant to support RDI wherever it’s needed most or a program of your choice. If you would like us to know who your gift is from, ask your DAF provider to include your name and contact information with the grant.
Don’t Have a DAF Yet?
Use this google sheet for a curated list of DAF providers, including the major players and some with specific cultural, political, or faith-based affiliations.
Once you have selected a DAF, these are the basic steps to get set-up:
Step 01
Complete the Application
Submit the DAF agreement, which includes naming the fund, identifying advisors, and setting investment preferences.
You may be asked to provide:
- Basic contact information
- Government-issued identification (for identity verification)
- Your Social Security Number or Tax Identification Number
- Information for any additional advisors on the fund
Step 02
Make an Initial Contribution
Transfer cash, stocks, or non-publicly traded assets (like real estate or crypto) to the account.
Common funding options include:
- Bank transfer (ACH)
- Stock transfer
- Wire transfer
You may be asked to provide:
- Brokerage account information for stock transfers
- Bank account information for ACH or wires
04
Donate Stock
Benefits of donating stock
If you own appreciated stock or other securities, donating them directly to RDI can be a tax-efficient way to make a meaningful gift.
When you sell appreciated securities yourself, you may owe capital gains tax on the increase in value. By donating securities you’ve held for more than one year directly to RDI, you may be able to:
- Avoid capital gains tax on the appreciation of the donated securities
- Claim a charitable deduction based on the fair market value of the securities, subject to applicable IRS limits
- Put more of your investment to work supporting RDI’s mission
Example
If you purchased stock for $2,000 and it is now worth $10,000, donating the shares directly to RDI may allow you to avoid recognizing the $8,000 capital gain while making a charitable gift valued at the full $10,000.
As with any charitable gift, we recommend consulting your tax or financial advisor about your individual circumstances.
How to give stock
Stock transfers often arrive without the donor’s name attached. Once you have initiated your transfer, please contact giving@rdi.org or (646) 922-9420 and provide:
- Your name, email, and address
- Name or ticker symbol of the security
- Number of shares
- Approximate date of transfer
This allows us to identify your gift and send the appropriate acknowledgment.
After notifying RDI of your intention, ask your broker to transfer the shares to:
Renew Democracy Initiative, Inc.
c/o Charles Schwab and
Co., Inc.
- DTC # 0164
- Account number 8827-8550
Already have a DAF?
Contribute stock directly to your fund through your provider instead, you’ll get the same tax benefit, and then recommend the grant to RDI once it’s ready. The transfer details above are only for stock gifts going straight to RDI, not through a DAF.
