About Us

Renew Democracy Initiative (“RDI”) is a non-partisan non-profit committed to unmasking and confronting the alliance of dictators threatening freedom around the world. By doing so, we inspire those in America and other free countries to value and protect their own democracies. Founded in 2017 by former World Chess Champion and Russian dissident Garry Kasparov, we create popular and engaging content to unite Americans across the political spectrum in defense of the values underpinning our republic.

Our work is guided by RDI’s four key pillars:

  • Educate: We leverage the voices of unique messengers to organize events and create written and video content that highlights the threats facing liberal democracy while uniting disparate communities around common principles.
  • Advocate: We aim to shift opinion and behavior among targeted groups of thought leaders, decision-makers, and other key constituencies on issues critical to RDI’s mission.
  • Act: Where we can add unique value, we offer direct support to those whose freedom is threatened by authoritarianism.
  • Build Community: Both virtually and in-person, we build communities of thought leaders, dissidents, students, and others who believe in and are committed to the values of liberal democracy.

Job Summary

The Renew Democracy Initiative is seeking a talented writer, editor, and organizer to help grow our 60,000-subscriber publication, The Next Move, and strengthen RDI’s voice across fundraising and event communications.

This role is ideal for someone with sharp political and editorial judgment, a strong sense of narrative, and the ability to identify compelling ideas and exceptional writing. We are looking for an ambitious writer and operator who aspires to make a name for themselves as a part of a dynamic team: candidates should be enthusiastic about the opportunity to publish in their own names and to support established writers in producing content. The successful candidate will be equally comfortable editing a Substack essay, drafting fundraising copy, managing social content, and helping shape the public voice of a fast-growing organization.

This role also has a significant organizational component: The ideal candidate will be able to take the initiative, often without explicit direction, and be able to identify new programmatic, partnership, and media opportunities that align with RDI’s mission.

We are also looking for someone who understands how to use AI effectively as part of a modern communications workflow, while also recognizing that strong human judgment and taste remain essential.

RDI is a startup environment, with significant opportunities for personal and professional growth, as well as an expectation that team members have an all-hands-on-deck ethos.
