The Democracy Pledge

On January 6, 2021, we witnessed a direct attack on our democracy. The President of the United States incited his supporters to storm the Capitol during the certification of the 2020 Presidential Election. Make no mistake, this was an attempt to overturn the will of the people and interrupt the peaceful transfer of power.

Here and now, we must draw a line and make a commitment to one another as Americans that we will defend the democratic traditions that have made our nation great.

I pledge to never support an authoritarian leader. The survival of our democratic experiment is more important than any single policy. Regardless of a particular leader’s party affiliation, if they don’t share my commitment to the fundamental ideals of democracy, which include a peaceful transition of power in case they lose, I cannot support them.

Democracy Under Attack

On January 6, 2021, the President of the United States incited his supporters to storm the Capitol in order to disrupt an election. This was the culmination of his months-long campaign to undermine our fair and free elections and ultimately, the will of the people.

We are confronting the most serious threat to our democracy since the Civil War. We must reject the extreme and irresponsible behavior that made these events possible and replace it with a positive vision of what American democracy is and can be.

To this end, the Renew Democracy Initiative will launch the campaign: What Democracy Means to Me. We call on all Americans to share what democracy means to them in a short, 60-second video, photo, or message posted on any social media platform, such as Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Be sure to include the #RenewDemocracy hashtag in your post and challenge 3 of your friends, family members, or colleagues to participate!

In this time of crisis, we must reaffirm and renew our commitment to democracy. It is imperative that the overwhelming majority of Americans demonstrate the power of our collective voice and the resilience of our nation.
