Andrei Sannikov

Belarus
Ambassador Andrei Sannikov is a Belarusian diplomat, politician, and human rights activist. He is Chairman of the European Belarus Foundation. Born in 1954 in Minsk, he had a distinguished career in diplomacy, serving in the Foreign Ministry of Belarus and as Deputy Foreign Minister in 1995-1996. He resigned in 1996 in protest against President Lukashenko’s policies and became actively involved in civil society and opposition politics.

In 1997, Sannikov co-founded the civil initiative Charter’97, and in 2008, he initiated the European Belarus campaign, advocating for Belarus’s integration into the European Union. Sannikov ran in the 2010 presidential election in Belarus, securing the second-highest percentage of popular votes. He was incarcerated in a Minsk KGB facility for peacefully protesting at a demonstration after the elections. Released in on April 14 ,2012, under international pressure, Sannikov was forced into exile and now lives and works in Europe.

Sannikov was awarded the Bruno Kreisky Prize in 2005 for his human rights efforts and is the author of My Story: Belarusian Amerikanka or Elections Under Dictatorship. He continues to campaign for the interests of a democratic Belarus.
