Ambassador Claudia Escobar Mejía is a diplomat, legal scholar, and anti-corruption advocate. She currently serves as the Permanent Representative of Guatemala to the Organization of American States (OAS), where she was recently elected to preside over the Voluntary Group for the Follow-up of the Inter-American Democratic Charter. She previously chaired the OAS Permanent Council’s Commission on Juridical and Political Affairs.
Her career spans decades of public service, academic research, and advocacy for the rule of law. She served as a magistrate of Guatemala’s Court of Appeals and is widely recognized for her leadership in the fight against corruption. In 2017, she received the Democracy Award for her efforts to strengthen democratic institutions.
Ambassador Escobar has been awarded fellowships at Harvard University and Georgetown University’s School of Foreign Service, where she was a Centennial Fellow and Intern-in-Residence (MSFS. She holds a Ph.D. from the Autonomous University of Barcelona and a law degree from Universidad Francisco Marroquín (Guatemala).
