Peter Kovler has long been connected to philanthropic and pro Democracy efforts, including years of service on the Board of Directors of National Democratic Institute. Among his non profit works has been the founding of Chicago's Marjorie Kovler Center for the Treatment of Survivors of Torture.
In 2024 he was awarded France's highest civilian decoration, their Legion of Honour.
